A natural landmark of southern Oregon,
Rainie Falls is shown here with the Rogue River in moderate flow — with
just enough water that the fish can get up speed for the jump but not
enough to make survival likely for inattentive rafters. That looks
like a Sockeye salmon painted in mid-leap, although it might be a
King...
The challenge behind this image was
capturing the river's sudden drop as contrasted with its relative flatness
upstream, then evoking the depths of
both the waterfall and its receiving pool as een through the turbulent dynamic of the
rushing waters. I think I did a pretty darned good job because my ears
still thunder whenever I look at it.
Rainie Falls cannot be reached by motor
vehicle but requires a walk or float of approximately two miles down
from Grave Creek along the
Wild and Scenic section of the Rogue River. To float it requires a permit, as
well as the good sense not to go
over the falls which have taken too many lives already. If you're
hiking it, don't take the Rogue River Trail — park across the bridge
from the boat launch (on the South side of the river) and take the trail
that leads from there. Don't forget to take drinking water, trail
food, and someone to share it with.

you are interested in acquiring this painting you'll need to go
